Retirement Timetable

1 1/2 to 5 Years Before Retiring

  • Become informed and stay informed
  • Read your plan booklet
  • Attend a Retirement Seminar
  • Meet with an information Representative

            > Schedule an appointment at the consultation site in Albany at 110 State    

               Street or in Poughkeepsie at 4 Burnett Blvd by calling toll-free    

               1-866-805-0990 or

            > Register for an individual Laptop Retirement Consultation at 845-340-3542

  • Request credit for previous service
  • Reduce / Pay-off Loan Balance

12-18 Months Before Retiring

  • Request a general estimate
  • Locate proof of your birth date (e.g. birth certificate, passport, etc.)

3 - 12 Months Before Retiring

  • Review retiree health insurance options

           > Contact the Employee Benefits Office at 845-340-3545 or 845-340-3546

  • Review domestic relations order
  • Review other income sources
  • Prepare a retirement budget
  • Organize your papers

1-3 Months Before Retiring

  • Submit your retirement application
  • File a W-4P form (federal tax form)

3-10 Weeks Before Retiring

  • Receive Estimate

By the Last Day of the Month You Retire

  • Elect a Retirement Option

The toll free number is: 1-866-805-0990

The toll-free number is designed to be a central point of information contact for members and retirees. 

When members contact the Call Center, they can connect with an interactive voice response (IVR) system that provides answers to a variety of important questions. They can get fast, concise and, in some cases, personalized information about loans, service credit, and location of consultation offices.

Customer service representatives are available every business day from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm to give the information that can't be found by using the IVR system.

Information is also available on the NYS Retirement System web site at www.osc.state.ny.us.
